Why switch?

Why Shopware 5 is no longer the right home for your store.

Shopware 5 served you well – but without updates, with costly maintenance and a growing plugin load it turns from a growth driver into a liability.

End of life, no security updates

Shopware 5 no longer receives regular updates. Every gap in the shop, its plugins or the PHP stack stays open – a real risk for revenue, customer data and PCI compliance.

Servers and plugins eat your time

Hosting, PHP upgrades, plugin compatibility, staging: Shopware 5 needs constant technical care. Shopify is hosted, patched and scaled – you focus on products and marketing.

Predictable cost instead of maintenance invoices

Servers, agency hours, plugin licences and emergency fixes add up quickly on Shopware 5. Shopify bundles hosting, security and updates into one predictable monthly price.

Performance and mobile conversion

Legacy Shopware 5 themes are often slow, especially on mobile. Shopify ships a global CDN, modern themes and a conversion-tested checkout without extra development.

Data migration

What moves from Shopware 5 to Shopify.

We map your full Shopware data set onto the Shopify data model – including the fields no standard importer knows about.

Products & pricing

All products with SKUs, descriptions, tiered pricing, customer group prices and tax rates.

Variants

Shopware configurators are mapped to Shopify options and variants – including surcharges and SKUs.

Properties & filters

Free-text fields, properties and filter values become metafields and Shopify filter taxonomy entries.

Categories & navigation

Category tree, streaming categories and menus are rebuilt as Shopify collections and navigation.

Customers & customer groups

Customer accounts, addresses and customer groups including B2B logic and net price display.

Order history

Orders with line items and status – ready for reporting, returns and support from day one.

Images & media

Product images, galleries, data sheets and downloads are transferred and correctly linked.

SEO data & URLs

Meta titles, descriptions, canonicals and every Shopware URL as a 301 redirect.

Special cases such as bundles, configurator products, voucher logic or ERP fields are reviewed during the analysis and mapped individually.

SEO & 301 redirects

Keep your rankings despite a new URL structure.

Shopify enforces its own paths like /products/ and /collections/. This is exactly where unguided Shopware migrations lose visibility. We plan the structure upfront and 301 every old URL to its new target.

  1. 1

    URL & ranking audit

We pull every indexed Shopware URL from the sitemap, Search Console and a crawl – including traffic and rankings.

  2. 2

    1:1 mapping

Every product, category and CMS URL gets a defined Shopify target. No blanket redirect to the homepage.

  3. 3

    301s at go-live

Redirects ship with the launch – together with sitemap, robots.txt, canonicals and structured data.

  4. 4

    Post-launch monitoring

After launch we monitor crawling, 404s and rankings and fix issues until the curve recovers.

We also carry over meta data, hreflang annotations and structured data so Google understands the new store immediately.

Pitfalls

Where Shopware migrations typically go wrong.

These four points decide whether a Shopware to Shopify migration delivers clean data or weeks of rework.

Variants & configurators

Problem

Shopware 5 supports unlimited configurator dimensions while Shopify allows three options and 100 variants per product. Standard importers fail here or create duplicates.

Our solution

We analyse the variant matrix upfront, consolidate dimensions sensibly and rebuild complex configurators via metafields or product sets – without losing data.

Properties & free-text fields

Problem

Shopware properties, filters and free-text fields have no direct Shopify equivalent. They often end up inside the description text and are lost for filters and templates.

Our solution

We move them into structured metafields and the Shopify filter taxonomy. Filters, templates and feeds then read real data instead of HTML.

URL structure & redirects

Problem

Shopify prescribes /products/ and /collections/. Without mapping old Shopware URLs individually you lose rankings, backlinks and ad quality.

Our solution

Full URL mapping before launch, 301s for products, categories, CMS pages and pagination – plus post-launch checks for 404s and redirect chains.

Plugins & custom logic

Problem

B2B pricing, minimum order values, voucher rules or ERP integrations live in Shopware plugins that simply don't exist for Shopify.

Our solution

We assess every plugin: Shopify feature, app or custom build. Whatever matters we rebuild as a custom app, Shopify Flow or Shopify Functions.

FAQ

Common questions about Shopware to Shopify migration

Do I really have to leave Shopware 5?
Shopware 5 is end of life: no regular updates and no standard support. You can move to Shopware 6 – that is a full re-setup with your own server and your own maintenance. If you want less technical overhead and a larger app ecosystem, Shopify is usually the better fit.
How long does a Shopware 5 to Shopify migration take?
Usually around 4 weeks from kick-off to go-live. Very large catalogs, many variants or several plugin rebuilds can extend the timeline – we confirm the exact schedule after the analysis.
What happens to my Shopware variants and configurators?
Shopify allows up to three options and 100 variants per product. We review your variant matrix upfront, consolidate dimensions sensibly and rebuild complex configurators using metafields, product sets or a custom app.
Are properties and free-text fields migrated?
Yes. Properties, filter values and free-text fields are migrated as structured metafields and into the Shopify filter taxonomy – not as body copy. That keeps filters, templates and product feeds working.
Will I lose my Google rankings?
Not if the URL structure is planned in advance. We capture all indexed Shopware URLs, map them 1:1 to the new Shopify paths, ship 301 redirects at launch and then monitor crawling, 404s and rankings.
And my Shopware plugins?
Every plugin gets assessed: much of it is covered natively by Shopify or by an app. For B2B pricing, minimum order values, discount logic or ERP integrations we rebuild the logic as a custom app, Shopify Flow or Shopify Functions.
